Squarespace registered domains that are linked to Google Sites have recently been reported by multiple users (example) to not forward to their Google Sites webpage without adding "www" at the front of their domain name.

This is a problem because, on business cards and such, it is inconvenient to print the extra "www," not to mention most people don't type in "www" when going to a domain.

While I require this process to be verified, I have used Google's instructions here combined with my intuitions to solve this issue.

Login into squarespace.com and go to account.squarespace.com. enter image description here Then, click on the "Domains" tab on the top left of the dashboard. enter image description here Then, click on the domain you are having an issue with.

On the left dashboard, click the "Websites" section. enter image description here Afterwards, scroll down to the "Domain Forwarding" section. enter image description here Select the black "Add Rule" button on the left of the "Domain Forwarding" title.

In the "Forward from" input, put in a single "@" and in the "Forward to" input, put in your domain with a "www" in front. enter image description here enter image description here Afterward, I saw changes happen within 10 minutes.

If this Forward step gives you errors, retry after setting up the DNS as seen here. The DNS must be set up using this protocol as dictated by Squarespace, the Squarespace defaults don't seem to work.

In addition, I do have the "www" prefix toggle off per Squarespace's instructions, but it did not work properly before I used redirect as seen above.

Hopefully, this works for all of you as well — best wishes, especially to "noobs" like me who are trying to make their portfolios.

Edit: forwarding suddenly stopped working for me, I had a strange solution. Using information from Squarespace forums I had gotten prior, I went to the "Custom records" sections and input information from one of the rows in "Squarespace Domain Forwarding." After that it seemed to work for some reason. It may have had something to do with SSL certificates, but in general Squarespace's domain forwarding seems a bit buggy.

To solve the issue where domains registered through Squarespace and linked to Google Sites aren't forwarding to the webpage without adding "www" before the domain name, there are a couple of options.

Are you sure the DNS settings are correctly configured for the root domain (example.com) and pointing to the appropriate Google Sites IP address? You might need to add an "A" record for the root domain and a "CNAME" record for "www". If Squarespace doesn't allow direct IP address pointing, you may need to use a third-party DNS service.

If Squarespace's DNS management doesn't support this directly, you can use a DNS provider that allows root domain forwarding. This will automatically redirect traffic from "example.com" to "www.example.com".

You can also use a URL forwarding service. Some DNS providers offer URL forwarding services where you can set up a redirect from "example.com" to "www.example.com" without needing to make significant changes to DNS records.
