I am building an English written site, which has a custom font, which uses accented letters (eg. "é") to show a special symbol (standard "e" is also used and displays normally).

My question is how will this affect SEO ranking (if at all)?

If google does penalise for using accents in english language, is there a workaround I can use so google can read the content without the accents, but still display the accents (special symbols) to users?

  • Can you give an example of how this special symbol is used? Is it part of a word or used more like a logo? Is it replacing standard letters in standard words? What is the reason you are using accented characters? – Stephen Ostermiller Apr 28 at 8:53
