I was setting up a cron job in cPanel and started with usual:

/usr/local/bin/php

I'm an SEO and not an admin or dev so I've never really thought to wonder what I'm actually doing.

I get the broad concept of calling the binary but I don't actually know what's going on.

It kinda feels like those words you can use in a sentence but not define and I was wondering if someone can tell me the definition. :)

PHP is the interpreter that runs PHP scripts. You need to tell utilities and web servers where PHP is located by specifying the path to the executable, which when run slurps in the code contained within the script and executes it. Other examples of interpreters that get called to execute scripts include Python and Perl. – dan Apr 25 at 0:05
