When visiting my website I get an error in console tab (using Firefox). The error is:

Cross-Origin Request Blocked: The Same Origin Policy disallows reading the remote resource at somewebsite. (Reason: CORS header ‘Access-Control-Allow-Origin’ missing).

I guess that this means I didn't setup CORS correctly. I'm using apache2 on Ubuntu 16.04

Get rid of the CORS declaration in your .htaccess file as it is only needed in one spot and since you have access to a vhost file it is better off there.

A check of the vhost file you provided shows what the problem would be. You have created a self closed directory configuration <Directory /> which won't work. I have rewritten the vhost file below...

You will notice that the CORS header has been moved to the <Directory /var/www> block which is where it should be.

The mod_headers module could be disabled. Try enabling it and reload Apache.

sudo a2enmod headers
sudo service apache2 reload

If you still don't see the header try adding this to your .htaccess file:

There are many "conflicts" in your configuration files, so it's probably not working as you expect, which could also explain why the CORS header(s) is not being set correctly.

  • You have several <Directory> sections in the main server config with the same CORS directives of the form Header always set Access-Control... (note the always condition).
  • You are repeating the same/similar directives in .htaccess. (.htaccess will likely override the server config. However, it has been disabled - see below.)
  • You have a <VirtualHost> (vHost) container that has a single Header set Access-Control-Allow-Origin "*" (note the missing always condition - you may need to set this for the header to be applied) directive in a <Directory /> section.
    • The vHost will override the main server config, so the CORS directives in the main server config are likely being bypassed.
    • The <Directory> sections in the vHost all set AllowOverride None - which disables .htaccess. So none of the CORS directives in .htaccess are being processed (which would otherwise override the <Directory> sections in the vHost.
    • A <Directory /> section targets the entire server, which you should never do, except to disable access. (You disable access to the entire server and enable access/set directives in specific <Directory> containers.)

You need to move the appropriate directives to a <Directory /var/www/website> container (which targets the DocumentRoot) in your <VirtualHost>, since the directives in the main server config and .htaccess are being overridden.
