I think your rewrite rule can generate problems. A page such as here-index.php would also be converted to / . Not automatically a bad thing, but it's not just index.php , index.htm , or index.html that will be redirected. To make sure it's only a path before, something like this would work: ^(?:(.*)/)?index\.(php|html?)$
