I'd love it if someone who really knows could help me straighten some things:

On one hand, I read that Google prefers the page to have the earliest publish date, in order to prioritize original content over scraping websites.

On the other hand, Google also prioritizes fresh content, with late publish dates.

Also, what prevents webmasters from faking earlier/later dates in order to "win" SEO points for those reasons?
