comment Are icon fonts bad for SEO?
with a srpite you will always run into quality issues, because it's bitmap, whereas icon fonts are vectors. The most common implementation of icon fonts I see is to indeed download a whole font. As for icon font browser support, I'm not sure, but tests I made recently with IE, FF, Chrome didn't show any problems.

comment How to measure the conversion rate of your Amazon affiliate program?
Here is a talk about tracking users: stackoverflow.com/questions/4030780/…. It seems that the whole legal argument revolves around the notion of "personally identifiable information". Unless mistaken I don't think a user id or session falls within that definition because without access to the users database (which is yours and private) one cannot personally identify someone based on an id or session. I have little hope Amazon will do more towards an integration with GA, I don't see what's there to gain for them.

@Anagio: Do you have the link to the paragraph you appended? Without going as far as integrating Amazon Associate sales with Google Analytics there would be ways of measuring the conversion rate (see my suggestion in italic at the bottom of my question), but it doesn't look like Amazon offers any. Maybe they do not want their affiliates to have precise figures about this sort of metrics for one reason or another (maybe to protect themselves from having to answer about low conversion rates when they are effectively low).

comment Creating country specific twitter/facebook accounts
why not use AcmeCountry for both Facebook and Twitter: did you feel that Acme_Country offered better user experience and justified having inconsistent namings between Twitter and Facebook?

What do you mean by "your drop in link juice transfer is minimal"?

comment How to handle URLs with diacritic characters
@milo5b: Could you clarify what you mean by "will lose a tiny portion of link-juice in the process" please? what I'm afraid of with marketing the UTF version is that the URLs get messed up during the process (I see that every now and then, even on notorious websites whereby UTF-8 is not rendered properly. As for marketing percent-encoded URLs that's out of the question, it's just unreadable.

comment Multilingual website without language component in the URL
True, although for my website (obviously you couldn't have figured out as I didn't mention it) I am expecting URLs to be like phrases, so the combination of words will be unique per language. After posting my question I just realized that for new visitors coming to the home page from search engines, I will have no way of differentiating the 2 languages as the URL will be the same for both (i.e. /) and the user won't be sending the language cookie :( Back to the drawing board...

comment How does Google prevent GA accounts from being spammed
what would you achieve by doing this?: well given how valuable analytics are to any web company for understanding its business I could imagine companies using such techniques against competitors to render their GA account unusable.

Indeed, what a miss.

comment Download images and other documents from external websites
it's not so much about bandwidth cost, but performance: if many users are downloading a 1MB file at the same time, this could affect other users browsing the website.

I'm having difficulties locating the paragraph you quoted (I searched for some of its keywords in the link I provided and in section 3.4 and couldn't find anything). Can you provide me a link to it please? (ideally with hash tag if possible).

Social Network Analysis for Startups seems a bit advanced: do you also have step-by-step guides for creating & managing Facebook and Twitter accounts? SeoMoz seems definitely to be a good source.

I might just buy that book indeed. Agreed that one shouldn't focus on social media only and forget about the bigger picture, but not looking at it at all (e.g. going live without a Facebook page) seems like a even bigger mistake.

What happens for people who are behind proxies, VPN's, or running Tor? I believe that represents a neglectable portion of Internet users in general.

comment Migrated website: PageRank and 404's
I wasn't aware that the PageRank only took into account the number of links pointing to a page, I thought the term also comprised the other criteria used to rank the page on the search results. Are you saying that apart from 404 pages that are referenced from within our own website, serving 404 pages to Google should have no influence on the ranking of our website and its various pages on search results?
