I am an English teacher, born in Scotland but I have been living in China since 2006. In my spare time I build websites and write articles about China. I am also a keen travel photographer and contributor to Getty Images stock library.

comment Is a 404 on a non displaying files a problem
Why would a blank file be any faster than a 404? Assuming the 404 error page's text is minimal is there any speed difference between Apache serving a real file versus the 404 error page file.

comment Is liquid layout good or creating multiple css file for universal accessibility of web pages?
Unfortunetly CSS3 media queries are not supported in Internet Explorer prior to version 9 so I would hold of using them just yet. caniuse.com/#search=media

comment Is it possible to 'trigger' indexing on a site?
Very important. Must use 301 redirects. In my experience, Google will keep trying to index the old site's URL for months or even years unless directed to another valid page.

comment What is a lot of traffic?
Nice scale but I think your should also factor in the size of the site. If you have a 5,000 page site, then a million unique visitors would be quite different from a 5 page site with a million unique visitors.

comment If your site has been flagged, “this site may harm your computer” how long before Google takes action
In addition, sites blocked by this warning will also be blocked in Chrome and Firefox. If people see links that are not working, they will remove the link from their site. So with time PR is going to drop which will affect search rank.

comment If your site has been flagged, “this site may harm your computer” how long before Google takes action
I know many people say so but there are many SEO fables. I have seen sites with this notice remain in the search results of years with no change. The only comments I can find that actually come form google employees (rather than guesses) say that google doesn't remove the sites but rather tries to contact the webmaster by email, google webmasters and through that warning message. See: google.com/support/forum/p/Webmasters/…

comment Domain registration - Does the registrar matter?
An additional impact of a transfer is that usually one year is added to the life of the domain.

comment Would reducing the quality and/or size of images fall under fair use?
The copyright law applies to your location, the server location and also to the location of the user who views the picture. Fair use is a legal minefield and your best to consult a copyright lawyer.

comment What % of a page needs to be unique in order to prevent duplicate content penalties?
This isn't about spam, it's about whither the perfectly normal practice of quoting sources in an article would count as duplicate content and incur some penalty or not.

comment Deliver my website all over the world hosting
I understand your concern about google in Asia. I live in China. Accessing google is no problem. The google speed has a test feature which includes servers in China, Hong Kong and Japan so you can test before making the switch.

comment Deliver my website all over the world hosting
A CDN would be my recommendation too, rather than a host with multiple version of your site on different servers that you have to manage independently, the CDN effectivly does all the hard work for you serving your content from a server close to the end use and speeding up the system. There are some other CDN's too look for asside from CloudFlare. One new on was launched by google just last week. Have a look at code.google.com/speed/pss/index.html

comment Host Change - What is a good method for testing SSL before pointing DNS at new host?
I'd guess this would work. As toby says, edit your hosts file to point that domain to the new server IP for your PC only. Test it works then change your main DNS over.

comment How long after your domain expires do you have to re-register it before someone else can?
In addition, reinstating recently expired domain is often significantly more expensive than renewing on time.

comment Control Content Hosting, DNS Hosting and Registration with command line?
Really setting up your own server at home is a useful exercise but it's not a long term solution to your hosting requirements. The cost will be roughly the same as running your refrigerator, depending on the efficiency of the PC you use. Setting up a home server is useful to learn how DNS, Apache, Exim and so on, all fit together. This knowledge will than let you move on to real hosting or even to your own VPS is your sites are a success.

comment Why is IPv6 not backward compatible with IPv4?
IP addresses are not allocated when people register a domain. Hundreds or thousands of domains can be hosted on a single IP address.

comment How can I tell which pages of a site are indexed by Google or Bing?
Bing also supports site:example.com to list all indexed pages within a site. Entering the same into yahoo will take you to the site explorer website where you can delete url's directly. Note that the site:example.com search may omit some pages where two or more pages contain similar content.

comment What would happen to my domains if my domain provider company bankrupted
The ICANN registry fallover plan is at this link (PDF) icann.org/en/registries/continuity/… there is some variation depending on what TLD you use but things should keep running for 60 to 90 days giving you time to transfer.
