@StephenOstermiller I did not know that about Google! Thanks for informing me and others. I was merely thinking in terms of the specification rather than specific agent implementations.

@Zistoloen That's not correct advice. Better for SE is to provide as good an answer as possible, given the information available, and also ask for more. If the OP edits their question to provide more info, the answerer can edit their answer accordingly. If the question is not updated, at least something of an answer is provided.

@tirengarfio try also using -progressive, but it could be that smushit is just lowering the image quality (-q 60 or something) so what you get out is bound to be smaller if you do that.

comment Are images with non-standard extensions (such as “.ashx”, instead of “.png” or “.jpg”) bad for SEO?
Better yet, use no extensions at all :) /images?id=picture-of-an-elf or /images/picture-of-an-elf (which runs index.ashx and passes in picture-of-an-elf) That way you can change your technology without having an identity crisis with your URLs!

I left that out in case your build of jpegtran doesn't support it (I know that on GoDaddy shared hosts, for example, the version of jpegtran there dates from 1998 and thus doesn't support it). -perfect is primarily of use in the rotation operations where you have edges that don't fall on block boundaries.
