comment Most used Free (a in Open) Joomla Extensions
Shame this was closed - it's a very good point (i.e. a big flaw of joomla), and I'd be interested in the answers! Please drop by and support the Joomla StackExchange proposal where you'll be able to ask this very type of question.

comment Use - or misuse - of ETags
No, that's what I thought. I may be oversimplifying the code, and/or missing something, but my testing seems to confirm the dodgy behaviour, and the 'etag = md5(URL)' code is there for all to see. This is joomla 1.5, btw.

comment Use - or misuse - of ETags
This is for dynamic content, assembled from files, and the database. It's a blanket policy for all URLs. This is quite a well known CMS, albeit not the latest version (but a version that is in widespread use)

@paulmorriss: you also need to ensure you save your text file with the correct encoding

The other advantage to using real unicode characters over character entities, of course, is that you can actually see the character when you edit your HTML later. With entities, you need to go look up the character to find out what it is. Personally, I hate viewing HTML full of character entities - it just breaks my reading flow. The only exceptions I make are characters that are very easily confused: various dashes and, of course, different forms of whitespace. The one advantage of entities is that they're portable across editors.

comment Font resizing widgets: worth it?
I'm willing to bet there's a widget size that doesn't cover a large portion of the screen, and is also far more likely to be seen than the accessibility statement...

@neutron: I don't think any of us would argue that it's not preferable for every web user to fully understand how to use their browser. And it's admirable that you're helping to move the world in that direction. But the sad fact is that we're a long way off that ideal position, and - in the meantime - have to resort to 'fallbacks' so that no-one is left behind.

comment scorecardresearch dot com: weird tracking pixel
OK - I guess I was a little wary, but it's reassuring to hear that they're legit. I'll have to assume their tracking image is used for honest-to-goodness analytics. It's a bit concerning that these are different domains, and also that flash can - apparently - alter the DOM, but I know what I can do if I'm really bothered by it all :)

comment scorecardresearch dot com: weird tracking pixel
It's a site for which I'm the acting web developer. Someone, via our CMS, has added that flash onto the page, in order to display a 'slideshow'.

@igor please understand, I'm not saying your question is without value, just that it needs to be rewritten to be meaningful to a wider audience. One aim of the SE family of sites is to provide long-term, high quality content that can be reused and referenced (think wikipedia). This is an example of a question that would really benefit from an edit.

It's not an implementation of the facebook like button though, is it?

comment Are there any downsides to starting a domain name with a digit?
Agreed, but this might not always be too much of a problem. Take the 101dalamations.com example from above; likely that most people reading it out would voice it as "one-oh-onedalamations" and most people would correctly understand that as "101...". But, yes, this is an excellent point and the same goes for many other URL weird-isms (the old del.icio.us, hyphens, etc.)

comment What is your favourite javascript lightbox implementation?
I'm not sure that clarification helped! By "custom" do you mean "hand-coded" as opposed to "off-the-shelf product"? Most lightboxes I've used (including the one in my example) are JS implementations, so it doesn't really matter whether the site runs on wordpress or compiled C code.

So few pages have titles that long, that I actually can't find one. Do you have any example?

comment How can I encourage the browser to download images from CSS file faster?
Daniel's description of the images he's referring to ("backgrounds", "icons") makes them sound very much like decoration, as opposed to content. I think they're right to be in the CSS.

comment Tableless layout table generator
Despite the good answers, this is still a REALLY poor question a) because of the lack of information and confusing wording b) because - depending on what the question actually is - it's unlikely to be of use to anyone else. Can someone with edit permissions tidy it up ASAP, please?

comment Implementing an aggregator and integrating it with WordPress
FeedWordPress looks like it has potential - thanks for the tip. Do you have any experience using it? BTW, we're only aggregating our own content (e.g. messages that we've tweeted, photos we've created and uploaded to flickr) so I don't envisage any problem there.
