comment TXT vs SPF record for Google servers SPF record, either or both?
Not many domain registrars provide tools for creating and managing actual SPF records while TXT support is quite common (just for example: popular GoDaddy). That's, of course, if you are not running your own DNS server. If you can -- create both. This will also be beneficial for services that actually support SPF records (because they first check SPF and if absent -- TXT).

comment Having mod_rewrite not rewrite requests for a particular directory
Why "Of course, this does not work"? I see nothing wrong here (unless there is mistake in folder name (missing/extra symbol or wrong case).

Your first example is a bit wrong (I'm refering to the second ^ character -- must be just typo). Something like this will be enough (could add NC flag as well if case-insensitivity is required) RewriteRule ^wordpress/ - [L]

comment .htaccess rule to redirect from 404 to search results
@Oddant Have a look at URL of this question -- do you think that there is real file with such path? That's just a "nice" URL. That's why this rule is placed at the end of other rules. Now .. if requested resource is not a real file or folder .. and it was not already processed (converted/rewritten from nice URL to a real file/folder), then it is a request to non-existing resource (as this is the last rule, which works like 404 handler, just in "manual" mode).

Check your Apache's error log -- it will have good enough detailed error message.

comment How does 301 redirection work across the network? & should I use it if there is a chance we made need to change the resource back to the original URL?
Try at least numbering your questions -- at least it will be easier to read and answer them. Right now it's TL;DR

comment Sitemap vs nofollow
Sitemap is advisory only while nofollow is an instruction. Therefore nofollow > sitemap.

If you are using HTML5 then use 2nd option -- the 1st one is now deprecated.

comment Rewriting isn't doing what's expected
@Charlie I suggest replacing PT flag by R=302,L and run a test: request problematic URL (e.g. /static/reset.css) -- then you should see where it may be wrong (I recommend watch some HTTP debugger as well, like Net panel of Firebug) as the rewrite rule seems fine to me.

Where this .htaccess is located? In website root folder (example.com/.htaccess) .. or example.com/public/.htaccess ?

@Kevin Maybe it is time to ask this question on StackOverflow.com -- a place for programming questions -- you may have your question answered quicker there. I've told you what headers to use. The other part (JS/HTML) may be answered there.
