I started a shinkwrap software company ("Micro ISV") in 1995. It's been my full-time job for over 13 years now.

comment Providing hyperlink in a page to the top of the page with <a href="#top>. Any problems with that?
This isn't actually a "back to the top" link. The page is about a webapp and the signup is at the top of the page. So when we talk about the webapp I want to link from the name to the top of the page so they can get to the signin button). (Although I am considering linking to the signup page and bypassing the button)

I tried #invalid and it didn't work (I, too, thought it would work and it didn't, hence my question. This appears to be an undocumented feature so I wanted to confirm it works across the board)

Thanks! Lousy excuse: I was trying to enter this before going to bed and had to use a cr@ppy touchscreen tablet, making typing a royal pain.

comment How to you prevent someone from getting a “new free trial period” by just creating a new login?
Hmmm... I suspect that many honest users will give a fake address from fear of getting junk mail (I do) and dishonest users (which is what I'm concerned about) will just use f fake address every time).

The trick is : unique info that users have a very limited # of (phone #) that they can verify ONLY they own.

Yeah, I considered that but many of our users are over 60 and don't have a FB account. And as long as they could claim to not have one then they'd have a way around the system.

What prevents the user from "starting over" and creating a whole new account? (on the same device)

Evercookie looks useful for this.

You could also record a hash of their cc # and cc name and billing zipcode and check for duplicates (of even just the cc name and billing address)
