In truth we can't agree with Stephen Ostermiller's answer that Google doesn't care about the length of article. Out of more than 200 ranking signals, search engines do assign some weight to articles with with more than 400 words. If that is so then why does text rank better than when placed/drawn within a picture?

I agree with you and also have upvoted your answer. But unfortunately Google, Bing can't disclose such technical theories, so we can't have authoritative references for this answer. Matt's quoted answer does not directly answer this question. However this is closest reference you or I could get for this.
