Ben Duguid works in London, UK as Head of Back-end Development for Hugo & Cat, mostly delivering web sites on various Microsoft based platforms.

He has run internal training sessions helping other developers get up to speed in the technologies he knows about, and tries hard to get others to do the same.

For what it's worth he is an MCPD in ASP.NET 3.5, and is currently a Pro-Tem Mod on LEGO Answers

comment How to evaluate a web developer?
@ionFish totally agree that you should get what you pay for - does depend on the contract however - if source isn't included - even with an agency you might not get complete source code... that being said, I've just done some work for someone where the hosting wasn't what I'd specified, and it resulted in a substantial extra time and cost for the client as I tried to make it work :(

One other thing - While paying for hosting yourself will almost certainly be cheaper, you should purchase this in consultation with your chosen developer, especially if you're looking for a CMS type solution.

@ionFish True enough - that's partly why I didn't mention education - I guess it depends on how long they've been doing it ;)

There should be no issue with asking someone for: 1. Examples of previous work, 2. References for that work - and do follow these up.

comment Sub domain or sub-folder?
No probs, the recommendations work better when there's more text to go on ;)

This is probably a duplicate of Do subdomains help/hurt SEO or Subdomain versus subdirectory

Sounds to me more like a Domain Arbitration issue than anything that can really be done short term through SEO - New sites will indeed take time to gain rankings, especially over established sites with similar domain names.

comment What is the advantage of increasing “maximum worker processes” in IIS?
No, I don't think there's a way to direct a request to a particular wp - hence the notes about configuring session sharing.

comment Expiring domain transfer
Cheers for the credit Paul :) I believe that you should be be able to transfer the domain as soon as the renewal's been processed - so if you renewed it today for a year, the expiry should be updated to August 2013, and once that's on the record you can transfer it. Also while you won't get a refund, your domain will still be registered until that date, so it's not as if you've lost the money...

comment Is it legal to use Drupal, Joomla, WP, Zend Framework, jQuery icons on my page?
Can't get to Wappalyzer at the moment, but in general MS, Apple, etc. have guidelines roughly along the lines of: 3rd parties may use the Logo without a license provided that the area in which the logo is used includes the logo of at least 1 other company with which you have a similar relationship or in an area of a website exclusively dedicated to the sale of Microsoft products. So they're probably fine.
