@TimC we no longer use Kentico however Picasa is doing a great job of DAM with CDN support.

comment Is there a way of using HTTPS with Amazon's CloudFront CDN and CNAMEs?
developers.google.com/appengine/docs/ssl documents it. After 2 years of trying to get AWS to support the feature, being offered a vote on it when a competitor has already released the feature is too little too late.

Now using Smush.it to reduce files below 150kb (if possible) then PunyPNGing them.

comment Smush. It or similar lossless image shrinking with API
its only 150kb for the free version (500kb costs $5 per month). Wasn't aware of PunyPNG, so thank you for bringing it to attention. Using Google App Engine so local executables are a no-no.

comment Smush. It or similar lossless image shrinking with API
The images are around 200-300kb. The API limits it to 150kb or requires payment. As this is for occasional use the pricing scheme isn't ideal.

comment How to use the domain of my old site to my new site?
Great advise, however remember to look before you leap, test it works by editing your local hosts file (/etc/hosts, %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts, etc) and putting in the new domain/IP pair.

comment How can I make my binary file is served as binary and not text when user choose “Save Linked File As…” in Safari?
Unless you convince Safari users to change their browser, or Apple to adjust the behaviour then you'll need to decide whether to disable context menus for links in Safari or educate users to remove the .txt suffix for unknown filetypes. Its not possible to have your cake and eat it in this situation. This solution just stops the context menu (the method of triggering this unwanted download behaviour) in Safari browsers.

comment URL Rewrite to subdomains?
Cannot change the case of categories (without inserting each one manually) and cannot deal with spaces easily. Look at it in reverse, given a URL how does the web server know what the underlying page should be? Changing domain/subdomain without redirects can also unravel site security.

Bottom line is that you shouldn't be getting 405s. Good luck.

comment How to check on the 99.99% Up time Guarantee?
@richaux won't move it to an answer, as I want to see how those who persist with upholding quoted SLAs manage to do it. There is a part of me that wishes it isn't a case of "resolved: won't fix".

comment How to check on the 99.99% Up time Guarantee?
Good luck with that. Despite there being external monitoring tools, you'd have a hard time claiming back from a flaky provider. Does the uptime % reflect the box, the link to the box, the power to the box, the next tier of box, the backup service, etc. You need to have a good relationship with a reliable supplier for SLAs to "mean" anything in the firstplace. Rackspace offer 100% SLAs that mean nothing, networking between Rackspace VPSs can become laggy and fail with no compensation. Also human error on their side is not reimbursed. Pick someone reliable first then work on SLAs.

@Christofian AFAIK only Byet byethost.com/index.php/free-hosting offer truly free VPS that is sensible for your needs. Although I cannot recommend it as they can take it away again at any time.

comment Google maps for a mobile site
We use fullscreen maps except for a small "back" button shown as a strip along the top. This avoided having to make different versions for different mobile browsers (the multitude of aspect ratios is maddening). A static image backup in-case of Javascript problems is used as well. After user-testing the fullscreen-esc version was easier to use, but judging from your question this is not the answer you want.
