comment Which online tournament software?
One of the requirements was "automatic bracket generation with selectable algorithms (round-robin, KO system, etc)" - this will require different fields against the same type of entity (game, player, match, league) or an ever growing bunch of SQL tables. You can do it with a bit-masked integer field (hoping that you do not hit the limit of its capabilities) and finding a way to express data in that format, or use NoSQL. Try drawing ERDs for a few example tournaments and see how many new tables per new type of tournament you have to create.

comment Do first impressions really count?
IMHO I think you'll have a hard time proving this based on your approach. First you'd need to decide upon your target market. Do you want something instantly entertaining and interactive, a minimalist listing system with clear yet not overstated brand identification, an effective sales "wizard", etc? The most useful studies I've read in this area try to better certain patterns such as the above. First impressions based on well founded disciplines and/or common sense generally succeed. But if some didn't buck the trend there would be no such things as innovation and niché markets/appeal.

@Lèse majesté if this was an answer - I would accept it. You're right and we are left to pick up the pieces. Recovery has gone quite well though.

It was a generic parking page with links to dodgy car insurers and a handful of our prominent competitors.

Unfortunately due to the nature of the company I work for, it wouldn't reflect well upon them to reveal such details. Although I appreciate it would be easier to see what is going on.

Not now (as we have addressed the issue) but last night I used Tor to see what it looked like from the US and it was showing a generic parking page.

Politics. I personally wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot bargepoll.

comment How can I prevent Google mistakenly offering to translate a page?
Google usually does use English for google.com, google.co.uk, etc however what about the crawler for google.de, etc? But regardless, selective use of the class seems the best way out of this.
