@JohnDoe Indeed, accuracy is a concern - there's a reason Google got to be Google, good search is very hard to do! I do think the home-field advantage of dealing with your data directly is worth it. Also, I didn't consider the performance aspect; I'll ammend my answer.

You don't need to add the host file entry on the server, you need to add it on the computer you're using. Then, when you visit your URL, your computer checks in it's local host file first to see if it's been defined there, which overrides any external DNS.
