comment Why do we have to pay for a domain name?
I didn't say it was the reason. I get what you are saying about domain squatters who make a business of prospectively buying keyword domains but it would be a heck of a lot worse if domains were free.

comment Hosting rails sites; vps or shared, and how much ram?
When you say heroku is slow sometimes, is this because they're idling due to inactivity? I'd say any site on heroku which is visited, and has content which is indexed by search engines won't spin down. Particularly for your static sinatra sites you could make use of varnish which would be very quick and not touch your application.

I've seen several questions I've asked on SO appear in google after a few minutes.

Yeah this is what I'm thinking, that I'm moving twice so to speak. Having said that, even if I were on the new domain and wanted to move to the new locale structured subdomains I'd find the same problem.

Hi Paul. I'm definitely wavering over this. Do you think it's not possible to not tell google I've gone to the domain, then redirect from it to the subdomains according to the locale param?

comment Moving domains with webmaster tools - dropped serp
So to update my experience of this. I found that eventually I did lose serp by about 20 places. I removed the change of address and a few days later I was back to where I was. This may be due to a large number of indexed addresses on the old domain which simply did not exist on the new. Also 500's during development might have meant I was penalised.

Thanks John, you've been very helpful yet again. I'll report back how this goes but for now I am back where I was.

Thanks for your answer. I have 301's in place so wouldn't expect any interim drop. Looking again at google I find my position restored but I'm still worried that maybe I previously glimpsed a new index yet to propagate to all of google.
