comment Google Webmaster Tools, DNS Errors & HostPapa
+1. Additionally, in Webmaster Tools if you go to the Fetch as Google feature and you can fetch your robots.txt file just fine, chances are it was something temporary on the route and no need to panic.

comment Google not listing my web site
Could you verify in Webmaster Tools both the www and non-www version of your site and check for active removals for both? Disclosure: I work for Google.

comment Different urls to same page and redirect
The preferred method is server side redirect. Rel canonical is rather a hint what we might take in consideration, but it's not a guarantee. A 301 is clear signal.

comment Indexing pages from own search engine
FYI, John, letting search engines to index search result pages is generally against their webmaster guidelines. Google's Webmaster Guidelines [1] for instance says: "Use robots.txt to prevent crawling of search results pages or other auto-generated pages that don't add much value for users coming from search engines." comment How is Googlebot finding URLs that are only visible to authenticated users?
If you're talking about the Google Toolbar only sends back URLs to Google in case you enable the "PageRank" feature, but we never used that data to discover new URLs. If about some other toolbar that was released by us, let me know please.

comment How to cross-link multiple sites with duplicate content that is search engine friendly?
I still say that you should not duplicate your content. Why would you enrich with your great content some other, random site when you can have it on your own site? Generally one or two links won't turn the world around. If you desperately want to do it, then yes, do link back to your original post as it makes easier for search engines to detect relationships.

"Not running their site" meaning that you're being scraped or that you're deliberately distributing your own content?

comment Validating sitemap with Yahoo Explorer
could you specify the URL of this sitemap index, please? Just from the root tag of the file is hard to say what's wrong with it. It's very likely that not the image sitemap reference is the issue.
