comment Despite adding a CNAME record for a subdoman, the webserver is showing the server's default host
@StephenOstermiller What, therefore, is the purpose of a CNAME? Wouldn't it be the same if I forget the CNAME and just add an A record and a virtual host for both subdomains, and point them both at the same directory? Am I correct in saying a CNAME would be useful for pointing to another server's domain but somewhat pointless on the same server?

@Michael-sqlbot Yes, sorry. That's what I mean.

So is it sufficient to add ServerAlias s2.example.com on the virtual host for s1.example.com or should I create a completely separate virtual host?

comment Force fresh content, not from the browser cache
If the original .htaccess redirect for maintenance is cached, won't this cause some sort of infinite loop?

Even though the current status says server connectivity failed? Edit: Okay, got it. The UI is unclear that the issue isn't still present, so I was confused.
