comment Adding Microdata to a website of company listings
Even with regards to huge companies I would still be cautious about assuming they've done everything as well as they could. External linking factors a lot more into your SEO rankings than anything you can do onsite! That said, the real Yellow Pages actually use Microdata on a per company level, just as closetnoc reasons they should... So maybe I'll mirror that, too.

My point is that you cannot tell how your competitors are ranking in the top 10 (as you put it) by just looking at their public code. For example, I remember one of our top ranking competitors had tens of thousands of entries in one sitemap file, which went against every recommendation by search engines at the time (and may still do). The chances are they were ranked highly due to other factors in spite of (rather than because of) their messy sitemap.

@bybe It's a mistake to assume that your competitors are following best practices just because they're ranked higher than you. There's LOTS of factors that go into your ranking, and copying something poorly implemented because you think that's helped them, when actually it's lots of inbound links, or something else that's helped them, is a huge mistake. You should NEVER blindly copy something without understanding what you're doing.

One of the most important lessons I learned working in a startup is never assume your competitors are right. If you ever get to see how they work on the inside, you generally discover they have no idea either.

comment SEO benefit of H1 tags on the homepage
SEOMoz's recommendation appears to be more for users than for Google ("a searcher who's just clicked on a results expects to see a matching headline on the page they visit"), but more than that, we're talking specifically about the homepage in this instance, whereas SEOMoz is talking about articles on a website.

I agree it's good practice elsewhere, especially for people with screen readers, but why is it good practice on the homepage? All it is going to contain is the site name, and possibly some keywords for Google. Why is this "good practice"?

@closetnoc SEOMoz have done years of machine learning and correlation tests, to see what makes a difference and what doesn't. Their conclusion was that a H1 tag (on ANY page, nevermind the homepage) was no more potent to bold text at the top of the page. Rand (founder of SEOMoz) has since gone on record to say that recommending everyone use H1 tags as one of the biggest five mistakes he ever made: moz.com/blog/…

How can you buy a domain certificate through a company that doesn't have access to the domain itself...? :-/

@Binarysurf Exactly. Thanks for quoting that. I don't know why Jukka doesn't want to put that in his answer. (I previously added this information, then accepted his answer, but he fumed that I'd "vandalized" his answer and rolled it back to the previous revision. shrug)

Your single citation, from w3.org, has nothing to do with SEO or dealing with single-language websites, hence my statement that you have no references in your answer relating to the question.
