comment Using .htaccess to set a cookie and 301 redirect
Well, you are setting the cookie while still on maine-horse-trails.com so it's not going to be available on chfmaine.com?

The script needs to be at the end of the body, right before </body>

comment Where does Google get the description text from when it's not in the page body?
Fun fact: when you Google Includes an introduction to current and past squads, pictures, a roster, related links, and upcoming events you will find that the description is used by other sites linking to the cheerleaders site, including dmoz.

but see the example in his question. The description text is nowhere in the HTML page on the cheerleaders site. How do you explain that?

Maksim: re your example - interesting question! I'm not sure whether their content has changed recently, or whether there actually is a way in the Webmasters program: google.com/webmasters/tools to enter descriptions. (Let me go check... Edit: I can't see anything like that in my Webmasters interface)

This doesn't answer his question though.

Google is probably extracting the description text from another place, like the body text. Can you show an example where you see a description in Google but no meta description tag?

comment What is redirecting mobile visitors to our website?
Hmm. Unless the entire machine has been hacked, this is likely to be somewhere in the Wordpress code. It might be worth downloading the full source and searching it or the offending domain name; also if you have access to phpMyAdmin, I'd do a quick search for the domain in all tables. It's possible that the domain name is encoded in some form that renders this simplistic approach useless but it'd be a worthwhile first step.

It has as little to do with Webmastering as it has with Programming, @Adrian.

comment Is minifying id and class names a bad SEO practice?
@ajax sounds like micro-optimization to me - consider that you'll save a few hundred bytes by this, while every JPG will cost you hundreds of times that. Plus proper gzip compression will take care of those patterns anyway. But I guess there's no harm in doing this, either
