comment Adressing external Wordpress Installation from primary Domain
That's true, if the ad campaign is using the company.com/ads URL in the ads, if you were using the company-landingpage.com domain for the ad campaign, it wouldn't be an issue. I assume the problem you're trying to solve is that you want the externally hosted content to appear on company.com/ads as if it were hosted there? Could you not just get your ad agency to send you the WP database and set it up on your own domain?

You could use an iframe.

comment Product vs brand ratings and reviews
I'd go with products as opposed to brands. If people are actively searching for a specific brand, chances are they're already familiar with it, and like it. If they're not familiar with a brand, they'll likely be more interested in ratings/reviews of it's individual products to get an idea of how others like their stuff, as opposed to a rating for the brand overall.

What was the 301 redirect that they did? Are they redirecting everything from /* to /source/* ? As long as there aren't links to /source/* files, you should be able to just re-upload them and have your hosting company remove the 301 redirect (if they're redirecting as I guessed).

comment My subdomains point to another website
Sounds like you're on shared hosting, and VirtualHosts aren't being created for your subdomains. Basically your server has multiple websites served from the same IP address, but the server needs to be setup to serve up different content based on the domain/subdomain being requested.

comment In CakePhP what is the recommended method for having one sub-domain that's outside the CakePhP environment?
Sort of... if it's just for testing on your own machine, you can create a dubdomain, or any hostname really, in your /etc/hosts file that points to 127.0.0.1 (localhost), and then create the VirtualHost for that hostname. You could also just setup the VirtualHost to listen on a different port, say port 81, and then use your IP address with port 81.
