"unless you are on a shoestring budget" - but I am. I really, really am, to the point that I'm considering going m+m on a cheap shared host rather than paying considerably less per month to pay for a year upfront. This way, I can pull the plug if the site doesn't start paying for itself relatively quickly. I think for now I'm leaning towards no-ssl since just getting the static ip needed alone would nearly double my monthly cost, not to mention the cost of the cert itself. The site is pretty close to being a forum, and most data is public, so there's no need for encryption outside of login.

Odd. I don't know how I didn't notice that for Facebook. I was looking at it from HTTPFox and somehow missed the 's' on the initial request. I'll edit to remove that. The fact still remains that a lot of sites do this (reddit, hacker news, TDWTF, etc.), so at worst I'd be no better than them. Budget is a massive concern of mine, so to spend an extra $5/mo for a static IP (on a $8/mo host...) as well as buying a decent cert.. I'd almost consider just not building the damn site.

comment How Important Is Email?
@Talvi: I never said a VPS was required for email. What I said was that I had other reasons to use a VPS (though I've now been talked out of that). My shared host has email already setup that I can use, but that isn't a built in thing with a VPS (obviously). Without knowing about Google Apps, I thought I was going to have to build the mail server myself.

Addendum: I know WebFaction isn't a VPS, but a friend of mine talked me into starting with shared, and WebFaction seems pretty customizable, with shell/ssh access and the ability to install Sphinx if I need it.

This definitely seems like the best idea for two reasons: 1) I'm looking at WebFaction for initial hosting, and they're setup so you can't use mail(). If I'm already outsourcing to an external SMTP server, it might as well be google. 2) If I ever get to the point where I outgrow google (which means emailing 25k people a day - 50 accounts * 500 unique addresses), hosting my own mail server will be a small concern.

Damn.. my bad. I didn't notice that the RewriteCond was excluding those directories. Sorry about that.
