I think bandwidth availability may be an important aspect of testing the number of users your site can handle. Without knowing if the server could support both the number of users, and the increased data load, it's hard to know "how many people can visit my site at the same time without the server slowing down or crashing". Testing from a remote location, which can properly simulate the load, is really the only way to figure this out.

I know this is a really old question, but I was going to add some info in case others find this question as well. The ads JMB was referring to would be ads that you sell yourself. So you offer to place an ad on the site for a given amount of time and money, and the person/company placing the ad would pay you directly. So you would be taking care of it all, instead of using adsense. Many sites do this by having an "Advertise with us!" link to a page with more details.

You can still do this with a dynamic IP address. There are services that allow you to install a little program on your computer, and eact time your dynamic IP changes it updates it in the DNS records so your domain always points to your IP address, even when it changes.

What type of advertising is used on these sites? Do the ads require clicks to make money, or is it based on impressions only?

But shitty sites serve no real purpose. They are just annoying because of the very poor quality. The purpose of creating a website is supposed to be to publish things of some value, not to create as much junk as you can and try to rake in advertising money. This is exactly the reason why Google drops sites like this from their index, because they serve no purpose to people looking for information.

If it's like a modem, then you don't need to configure it to allow access to your server.

comment Hiding whois information on GoDaddy registered domains
Are you sure that other service providers offered this for free? In order to comply with the ICANN requirements they need to be able to reach you at the contact info provided in the WHOIS database. When a company hides your details they usually put their own contact info in instead. If mail is sent to you at their address they will forward it on to you. So they usually charge for this service from my understanding because it is not quite as simple as hiding your contact information from the WHOIS search.

comment Do search engines treat index pages with excerpts as duplicate content of the pages they link to?
From Google: In the rare cases in which Google perceives that duplicate content may be shown with intent to manipulate our rankings and deceive our users, we'll also make appropriate adjustments in the indexing and ranking of the sites involved. As a result, the ranking of the site may suffer, or the site might be removed entirely from the Google index, in which case it will no longer appear in search results.
