comment Is traditional JavaScript image pre-loading taboo
@w3d Interesting. If that's the case, I guess I'll have to update my navigation sprite to include both states.

Nice. I have been using :hover and sprites all along but it's interesting that JS image pre-loading can still be made useful for non-static content. Does that hold true for all images that the user 'may' see (ex full size image after clicking on thumbnail). It has been a while since I've done a site from scratch, and 'best practices' have evolved.

@Osvaldo I don't see the problem, both are related and not mutually exclusive. I tend to say too much in my questions so here's the simple version. Is pre-loading images through javascript still standard practice in web development; If not, is there a viable CSS alternative?

I think you mean $(document.ready) not $(window).load. $(window).load fires after the whole page and all included images have been successfully loaded (ie, event is fired too late in the execution chain). See 4loc.wordpress.com/2009/04/28/documentready-vs-windowload.

comment Why aren't we supposed to use <table> in a design?
There is also a position:table CSS tag for creating table-based layouts without putting them in HTML. There are a few niche cases where tables are still the best/easiest option for layouts. Take a look @ css-tricks.com/fluid-width-equal-height-columns to see what I mean.

comment Pointing a subdomain to Github Pages
+1 Without more info about the situation I think this is the most likely cause. DNS changes take time to propagate. Here's some info on how to clear your local cache in Windows/OSX. docs.cpanel.net/twiki/bin/view/AllDocumentation/…. It may take additional time for the remote DNS servers to update to reflect the changes.

comment What organizations handle the TLD registries and what are the links to their whois search pages
@Su' Good to know. It turns out that one answer is enough to cover the question so a wiki is unnecessary. Thanks.

comment domain name hijacked by my hosting provider with dubious invoicing practice
Especially, if the whois records show the registrar as the owner of the domain; in which case, legal proceedings are a lost cause.
