comment Rolling Updates in a Webserver Farm?
Let's assume you have control over the legacy code - you'd include triggers to port any important transactions over to your updated schema (which should already include an import of the legacy data). Synchronization is not much of an issue with multi-master replication. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-master_replication

comment Rolling Updates in a Webserver Farm?
Why would you rely upon a single instance of a single database if you're making changes to the database schema?

comment Accepting money on a website as payment: when do I move past PayPal?
There are some problems with the assumption that there is a set cap for PayPal earnings to justify involvement with credit card processing, though. I've worked for various software and hosting services and PayPal never accounted for more than 20% of gross sales in a given month so it would stand to reason from my experience that one would be missing out on millions (and millions) in sales as a result of consumer reluctance to use PayPal if one held out until sales were > $100m to add CC processing.

comment How do you backup your websites?
No - HostGator disallows SSH access, however, it's fairly trivial to set up a cron job with a recursive wget call over FTP (if you don't mind exposing your login details).

comment Simple future-proof, backwards-compatible way to play audio mp3 files in-place on the page?
It's true, the action will open the M3U file with the preferred application on the system once it has downloaded - I'm sorry if I misinterpreted your requirement RE: leaving the page. The accepted answer for your question remains the best bet (and, unless the site's user stats indicate otherwise, I would bet that it will be sufficient to the site's needs).
