This might be a bit general question but is just something I wonder myself and I want to share it with you guys to see what you think about all this tendencies.

Lately I had designed some product websites and I did it having a look at some modern sites (such as spotify, skype, evernote, disqus, whatsapp, viget) as well as some themes for wordpress or drupal.

All of them seems to be using an "slider" bar at the top or middle of the site. I was wondering... is this the tendency for beautiful and sexy look sites?

Is it possible to find a good looking site without that slider? Doesn't it makes all a bit repetitive?

Now, when I design a site, I can not avoid trying to create that kind of slider and blocks of contents. Am I doing wrong? Should I forget about all these sites and try to create something new? In that case, wouldn't I be trying to reinvent the wheel? This new style seems to works pretty good...

Thanks.

evernote does not use a slider at all and disqus uses an animation instead of a slider. the element which most of your examples use is a very dominant intro and heavily focused on its main features. it's marketing 101. if the user doesn't get the message in 0.2 seconds, the user never will and will probably not sign up anyway. it really depends on the product you're selling though. every product can be super simple to bring your point across if the product manager allows it to. – DKOATED Feb 14 at 11:19
i mean, evernote has possibly a gazillion of really cool features, yet, they only use three abstract ones to make the product desireable and easy to grasp. same goes for shoes. ie. "run faster", "look better", "lightest shoe ever built" and not "best leather", "made in bangladesh", "3,78 inch sole" ... "as seen on tv", etc. – DKOATED Feb 14 at 11:22
It is not an slider but an "slider" :). It still being a green bar format which I am talking about. – Steve Feb 14 at 12:08
