Webmasters Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for pro webmasters. It's 100% free, no registration required.

So, an organization for my school wants me to revamp their current website. I'm really new when it comes to working on university servers and I really don't know much about the setup. But, I was sent the login credentials for the server which only requires the the site URL and my username & pass to login.

But the problem is that it seems that I have to use Web Expressions 4 or some other Microsoft WYSIWYG editor. I run a Mac workstation and really have having to boot into windows in order to edit the website. I would really rather use Dreamweaver or something of that sort.

Is there a MAC application that will let me access a server like this? or am I stuck having to use a Microsoft editor when working on this website?

Impossible to answer as is. You first need to explain/ask how you are allowed to modify files. Expressions supports several protocols from direct network file access to s/ftp to WebDAV. There probably is something else you can use, but if some of those options are locked down(as ftp appears to be), then you're wasting your time trying to pick another tool before even knowing what your requirements are. – Su' Jan 30 at 5:03
through Web Expressions I have access to a specific folder on the server with all of the files. But I don't think it will allow me download the files to my computer (unless I just don't know how). It seems I can only edit them from within expressions – Joshua Howell Jan 30 at 14:38
That doesn't really answer the question. FTP can also be restricted to a specific directory. What's the actual access method being used? Have you talked to your admins about this? – Su' Jan 31 at 16:26
In order for me to login and access their server. I have to input the website url, the Username (which is formatted like TTU\username) and password. I've been trying to contact the admins about this so I can find out exactly what protocol they are working under. – Joshua Howell Jan 31 at 22:01
