I would like to know what some good steps are for backing up one or many websites and what are some common problems to look out for?

We have a large network of sites and I need to ensure it is properly backed up at all times and currently we have nothing really in place.

A better Question to ask here would be along the lines of "What are some steps I should take to backup [...] and what are some pitfalls to look out for?" You'll get likely get high quality answers that are applicable to others as well. And if someone gives you specific "suggestions or recommendations" re: solutions, then that's OK, too! Reword your Question and it might get re-opened. – akTed Jan 16 at 5:13
Thanks much for the advice Ted! – absentx Jan 16 at 19:46
There are a number of questions on this site about backups. It's probably worth working through those. You don't give us any details as to whether your sites are using static files, scripting (e.g. PHP), databases. – paulmorriss Jan 18 at 9:46

It depends on the size of your websites.

If the size is too large, let says over 100GB, it would takes several hours or days if you use remote backup service. Such down time may not acceptable to you so it is not recommended.

If the size is not large or down time is not an issue, you can try Amazon Glacier or Acronis backup cloud.
