Webmasters Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for pro webmasters. It's 100% free, no registration required.

In the past few weeks we've done an extensive research on which programming language, system, framework, etc, should we use to develop our idea. We've used stackoverflow and stackexchange to learn a LOT, so I think it is the right place to ask this.

By the way. I'm from Mexico, so I apologize for any grammatical non-sense.

Our project includes two parts: 1) We are trying to build an online platform that allows users to compare products and services without all the caos of an ever expanding internet. First, we will test our platform with telecommunication services in Mexico: mobile and fixed telephony, broadband, pay-tv, and related products: hadsets, tablets, etc. We are starting there because is an industry we have experience with (we are bankers and work closely with the sector) and consumers actually do their own research before taking their decisions.

The platform's goal is to assist consumers and save them time, and hopefully money.

Our model for this Comparison Platform is FindTheBest.com | Find. Compare. Decide. (founded by the same guy that created DoubleClick, bought by Google).

2) In addition to this, we will have an online Tech magazine (or blog) to review products, write about new gadget launches, embed Youtube videos with product unboxings... pretty much like Engadget or The Verge

Our goal with this tech magazine is to build a community around our comparison platform, and for traffic purposes.

We are non-technical founders (but very motivated to learn by ourselves or asking experts when stucked), so first we are trying to find which system is the right one to develop the project.

I've contacted many agencies to see if they can develop our project, the mayority of them local ones, and everybody is suggesting very different approaches (and, thus, different prices).... so we are pretty confused right now!! Some suggest using a CMS like Wordpress, Drupal or ExpressionEngine, others suggest building a CMS from zero (whatever that means), and others say that Ruby on Rails, or Python.

What we want is flexibility and scalability, before ease of development (e.g. some agencies swear by Wordpress because it is easy to use and easy to build... yes, that's clear... but can we build a comparison site like FindTheBest with Wordpress?). However, if powerfulness and ease of use can live together, we would be very stupid if we don't take that route.

We want scability because we are starting with telecommunications services, but the we can move to dog breeds, or whatever.

We know that many programming languages can be used, but in your personal opinions, how would YOU develop it and why?

Can you give us some colour on the subject?

We would love to have this kind of online communities in our country...

We thank you all in advance.

Abrazos!
