Webmasters Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for pro webmasters. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I'm reluctant to ask this, as it may not pass the question requirements (not allowed to ask for suggestions?).

Our company operates in a niche which hires and sells equipment. Often there is a requirement to source new goods, which would then be hired or on-sold.

The industry (niche) as a whole does not really have anywhere specific online to go to find new goods. We thought about building a niche equivalent of eBay.

To build a clone of eBay, would a simple classifieds script be too simple? We would need the majority of features that eBay has.

Any suggestions for a web app to act as an equivalent of eBay?

eBay is successful as an auction site, not an Ad board (which is more the Craigslist model) and auctions are fairly complicated animals. Your description implies more of the Ad model. Which is it? –  JCL1178 Nov 22 '12 at 6:23

@JCL1178: more of an ad model I think, rather than auctions. Thanks for the question. –  Steve Nov 23 '12 at 8:28

Also, perhaps a Mall type model would be most suitable, where there are multiple shops which can be searched on. –  Steve Nov 23 '12 at 12:00

Niche or not, you still want to sell on amazon and ebay. Amazon has a web store option that is really neat. lets you sell on Amazon and your own domain. Its not exactly classified ads, where others can list stuff, but if you are selling products of your own might be a quick launch. –  Frank Nov 27 '12 at 8:57
