Many large sites have stopped using http://site to use only //site

Examples: In adwords tools And on some microsoft pages.

I believe that //site is bad bots because some may misconstrue and beyond that there are other protocols supported by most browsers and extensions.

My question is: Why are they doing this, would be a new standard?
