I want to dropcatch a domain name that is about to expire, but all the major services (SnapNames/Pool/NameJet/Godaddy) publicly announce that you backordered it, which leads to many other people bidding.

Is there a service that doesn't publish lists of domains backordered by other customers?

I've used Godaddy's backordering service this was years ago 2004/2005 I'm not sure if they had a bidding system in place then. If so I wasn't aware and had paid the $18 for them to monitor the domain and register it once deleted and available again. If it's a popular domain which you see bid on i'd wait till the day it's supposed to be deleted and place bids the day before. And watch it the day of. – Anagio Oct 23 '12 at 11:20

The auction service is interested in letting people know that the domain has bidders.

One technique I use is to not bid at all, and just wait for it to drop, but of course this is risky because it may not drop. I'd say try it a few times, and see if it works out for you better than backordering.
