I'm totally new to Liferay portal, and we are about to develop an online portal for a client (a local university). Our client's basic requirements are almost all implemented by default in Liferay, some others need to be developed as custom portlets.

Some of our team members are fluent in Java, but the team as a group has more experience developing community websites with both Django and Drupal, and Liferay is a whole new beast for us. I searched the web for developer's experiences doing custom portlet development with Liferay, and the results were really about lot of severe critics.

Now, I'm new to Liferay and I don't have a clear opinion. So, I'm asking you, experienced Liferay implementers/developers who know also about Django, for some enlightenment about the gain/loss we'll get if we take the Liferay piste compared to Django.

In its present form, this question invites polling and subjective responses - can you narrow down the featureset you are looking for to solicit a yes/no answer? – danlefree Jan 6 '12 at 18:30
also please don't cross post the same question on multiple sites. If you get it wrong, vote or flag the post for migration. The latter only if you don't have 3K reputation or the target isn't one of the normal migration routes. – ChrisF Jan 27 '12 at 14:38
