I need to know how to come up with content to a site , i.e. if I'm building a new site the only way to know what information to include in that site is to visit similar sites and find out what they show so that I mimic them. This ain't professional and I need to know how to come up with the appropriate content to my site by myself. I googled ALOT ! and found nothing important. some people might say that this is what information architecture is all about but I've read about IA and it seems to me that it deals with organizing the content not and stuff like navigation and sitemaps without any clue for coming up with content .

Is there any article, book title , course , or anything that teaches how to find out the appropriate content for the site instead of looking at other sites and trying to mimic them ?

How can you build a website about stuff you don't know anything about? How can you expect it to be successful? – John Conde Dec 9 '11 at 19:20

Brainstorming is a group creativity technique by which a group tries to find a solution for a specific problem by gathering a list of ideas spontaneously contributed by its members. – John Conde Dec 9 '11 at 19:22

They should be providing the content to you. If not, then you or the client need to hire a copywriter. – John Conde Dec 9 '11 at 19:29

Are you developing the site for someone else? If that is the case let them provide the content. If you are making the site for yourself and you don't know what content you want to add, don't make the site (unless you want to learn about making sites) :P – PeeHaa 埽 Dec 9 '11 at 19:58

The correct question is "how do I become a journalist, editor and copywriter in order to find content for my website"? Well first you have an interest, you collect information, you collate it, integrate it and you start typing. As posted, it's a "I'm trying to create a website for the website's sake, how do I fill it?" As to learning about making sites, there are a million ways to start. www.sitepoint.com has a lot of information heading you in that direction. – Fiasco Labs Dec 9 '11 at 20:16
