Should validation meta tags for search engines be left on the site following validation? For example, should I leave my msvalidate meta tag after I've validated the site.

Google's docs on site verification don't mention whether the method of verification used can be removed after successful verification. 1 2

Neither does Bing's

The safe thing to do would be to leave them in place but if you feel like figuring this out you can remove them and if you run into any issues, let us know about it here.

All methods should be left in place for Google verification.
Removing them will unverify your site. It isn't brought up on the main verification info page, but tacked on to the end of all the detail pages for the methods(meta, HTML, DNS, GAnalytics), eg:

Don't delete the tag from the page, as this will cause your site to become unverified.

I don't know about Bing.

As @Su' said, removing the Google validation snippets/files won't do you any favours, especially any that are used for analytics etc. – Aaron Lee Nov 16 '11 at 8:39
