They are an entirely flash based website, but are higher up on the search list than me. So I thought I would see why and I noticed that there is a bunch of commented out text with the Keyword "ABSOLUTE" in it. Is that considered black hat seo?

If the site is ranking highly for the word 'absolute' I would have said this was because it is part of the domain name, it is in the page title and quite possibly many links to the site will include this word since it is part of the company name (although G doesn't seem to report many inbound links?). It would seem that this site has been around for several years. How long has your site been going? –  w3d Aug 25 '11 at 19:42

No, because comments are ignored by search engines.

Although Flash based websites at are a disadvantage SEO wise because they lack semantic markup and usually lack internal linking as well, they do still benefit from incoming links from other websites in addition to other factors like page title, etc.

How can they possibly have better SEO than me :S I actually have keywords, descriptions and text content versus an entire flash website. OK Thanks! –  Howdy_McGee Aug 25 '11 at 17:31

Meta tags aren't used for ranking purposes. And just having content and text doesn't automatically make you rank well. The content needs to be high quality, your markup needs to be semantic, your site needs to be accessible, etc. There's a lot of factors affecting a page's ranking and they seem to be doing it better then your website. –  John Conde Aug 25 '11 at 17:34

google CAN index text and links inside flash files: googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/06/… –  iHaveacomputer Aug 26 '11 at 1:22

i do know that if the text on the flash site is static and not being gathered from else where adobe and google got together to make the flash websites searchable at all. but making all the content that static would be counter productive when they have to update it. but who knows some companies just have alot of money to spend.
