Does anyone have any recommendations for (opensource?) database driven web applications? I am looking for ready-made off the shelf software, which can display a database of restaurant menus, which can be searched by users, and sorted by price, location etc.

There are lots of web application frameworks that will do this for you. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Web_application_frameworks To help narrow it down - do you have a preferred programming language? I don't if there is something FOSS that exactly suits your needs, but I'd bet you could make what you need with Drupal without too much trouble.

I couldn't find any modules which allowed creation of searchable menus at the Drupal website. – Steve Jul 6 '11 at 12:45

This can be done with Expression Engine - Open Source but paid for. You should also be able to make it look good. They do some 'academic' free-licences to develop with.

ExpressionEngine is not open source. v2.x was built as an application of Ellis Lab's open source framework CodeIgniter, but EE itself is entirely commercial. – Su' Jul 6 '11 at 17:14
